Proverbs 5,6,7
Avoid Seduction
1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
listen closely[a] to my understanding(a)
2 so that you may maintain discretion
and your lips safeguard knowledge.(b)
3 Though the lips of the forbidden woman drip honey
and her words are[b] smoother than oil,
4 in the end she's as bitter as wormwood(c)
and as sharp as a double-edged sword.(d)
5 Her feet go down to death;
her steps head straight for Sheol.(e)
6 She doesn't consider the path of life;
she doesn't know that her ways are unstable.
7 So now, my sons, listen to me,
and don't turn away from the words of my mouth.(f)
8 Keep your way far from her.
Don't go near the door of her house.(g)
9 Otherwise, you will give up your vitality to others
and your years to someone cruel;
10 strangers will drain your resources,
and your earnings will end up in a foreigner's house.
11 At the end of your life, you will lament
when your physical body has been consumed,
12 and you will say, "How I hated discipline,
and how my heart despised correction.(h)
13 I didn't obey my teachers
or listen closely[c] to my mentors.
14 I am on the verge of complete ruin
before the entire community."
Enjoy Marriage
15 Drink water from your own cistern,
water flowing from your own well.(i)
16 Should your springs flow in the streets,
streams of water in the public squares?(j)
17 They should be for you alone
and not for you to share with strangers.
18 Let your fountain be blessed,
and take pleasure in the wife of your youth.(k)
19 A loving doe, a graceful fawn—
let her breasts always satisfy you;(l)
be lost in her love forever.
20 Why, my son, would you be infatuated
with a forbidden woman
or embrace the breast of a stranger?(m)
21 For a man's ways are before the
Lord
's eyes,(n)
and He considers all his paths.(o)
22 A wicked man's iniquities entrap him;(p)
he is entangled in the ropes of his own sin.(q)
23 He will die because there is no discipline,(r)
and be lost because of his great stupidity.
Financial Entanglements
1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor[a]
or entered into an agreement with[b] a stranger,[c](a)
2 you have been trapped by the words of your lips[d]—
ensnared by the words of your mouth.
3 Do this, then, my son, and free yourself,
for you have put yourself in your neighbor's power:
Go, humble yourself, and plead with your neighbor.
4 Don't give sleep to your eyes
or slumber to your eyelids.(b)
5 Escape like a gazelle from a hunter,[e]
like a bird from a fowler's trap.[f](c)
Laziness
6 Go to the ant,(d) you slacker!(e)
Observe its ways and become wise.
7 Without leader, administrator, or ruler,
8 it prepares its provisions in summer;
it gathers its food during harvest.(f)
9 How long will you stay in bed, you slacker?
When will you get up from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the arms to rest,(g)
11 and your poverty will come like a robber,
your need, like a bandit.(h)
The Malicious Man
12 A worthless person,(i) a wicked man
goes around speaking dishonestly,(j)
13 winking(k) his eyes, signaling with his feet,
and gesturing with his fingers.
14 He always plots evil(l) with perversity in his heart—
he stirs up trouble.(m)
15 Therefore calamity will strike him suddenly;
he will be shattered instantly—beyond recovery.(n)
What the Lord Hates
16 The
Lord
hates six things;
in fact, seven are detestable to Him:
17 arrogant eyes,(o) a lying tongue,(p)
hands that shed innocent blood,(q)
18 a heart that plots wicked schemes,(r)
feet eager to run to evil,(s)
19 a lying witness who gives false testimony,(t)
and one who stirs up trouble among brothers.(u)
Warning against Adultery
20 My son, keep your father's command,
and don't reject your mother's teaching.(v)
21 Always bind them to your heart;
tie them around your neck.(w)
22 When you walk here and there, they will guide you;
when you lie down, they will watch over you;
when you wake up, they will talk to you.
23 For a command is a lamp, teaching is a light,(x)
and corrective discipline is the way to life.(y)
24 They will protect you from an evil woman,[g]
from the flattering[h] tongue of a stranger.(z)
25 Don't lust in your heart for her beauty(aa)
or let her captivate you with her eyelashes.(ab)
26 For a prostitute's fee is only a loaf of bread,[i]
but an adulteress[j] goes after a precious life.(ac)
27 Can a man embrace fire[k]
and his clothes not be burned?
28 Can a man walk on burning coals
without scorching his feet?
29 So it is with the one who sleeps with
another man's wife;
no one who touches her will go unpunished.(ad)
30 People don't despise the thief if he steals
to satisfy himself when he is hungry.(ae)
31 Still, if caught, he must pay seven times as much;(af)
he must give up all the wealth in his house.
32 The one who commits adultery[l] lacks sense;
whoever does so destroys himself.(ag)
33 He will get a beating[m] and dishonor,
and his disgrace will never be removed.
34 For jealousy enrages a husband,(ah)
and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
35 He will not be appeased by anything
or be persuaded by lavish gifts.
1 My son, obey my words,
and treasure my commands.(a)
2 Keep my commands and live;(b)
protect my teachings
as the pupil of your eye.(c)
3 Tie them to your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.(d)
4 Say to wisdom, "You are my sister,"(e)
and call understanding your relative.
5 She will keep you from a forbidden woman,
a stranger with her flattering talk.(f)
A Story of Seduction
6 At the window of my house
I looked through my lattice.(g)
7 I saw among the inexperienced,[a]
I noticed among the youths,
a young man lacking sense.
8 Crossing the street near her corner,
he strolled down the road to her house
9 at twilight, in the evening,
in the dark of the night.(h)
10 A woman came to meet him
dressed like a prostitute,(i)
having a hidden agenda.[b]
11 She is loud and defiant;(j)
her feet do not stay at home.(k)
12 Now in the street, now in the squares,(l)
she lurks at every corner.(m)
13 She grabs him and kisses him;
she brazenly says[c] to him,
14 "I've made fellowship offerings;[d]
today I've fulfilled my vows.(n)
15 So I came out to meet you,
to search for you, and I've found you.
16 I've spread coverings on my bed(o)—
richly colored linen from Egypt.(p)
17 I've perfumed my bed
with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.(q)
18 Come, let's drink deeply of lovemaking until morning.(r)
Let's feast on each other's love!
19 My husband isn't home;
he went on a long journey.
20 He took a bag of money with him
and will come home at the time of the full moon."
21 She seduces him with her persistent pleading;
she lures with her flattering[e] talk.
22 He follows her impulsively
like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer bounding toward a trap[f]
23 until an arrow pierces its[g] liver,(s)
like a bird darting into a snare(t)—
he doesn't know it will cost him his life.
24 Now, my sons, listen to me,
and pay attention to the words of my mouth.
25 Don't let your heart turn aside to her ways;
don't stray onto her paths.(u)
26 For she has brought many down to death;
her victims are countless.[h]
27 Her house is the road to Sheol,
descending to the chambers of death.(v)
John 20
Chapter 20
The Empty Tomb
1 On(a) the first day of the week(b) Mary Magdalene(c) came to the tomb(d) early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone(e) had been removed[a] from the tomb. 2 So she ran to Simon Peter(f) and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,(g) and we don't know where they have put Him!"
3 At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb. 4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first. 5 Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths(h) lying there, yet he did not go in. 6 Then, following him, Simon Peter came also. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there. 7 The wrapping(i) that had been on His head was not lying with the linen cloths(j) but was folded up in a separate place by itself. 8 The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then entered the tomb, saw, and believed. 9 For they still did not understand the Scripture(k) that He must rise(l) from the dead.(m) 10 Then the disciples went home again.
Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord
11 But(n) Mary stood outside facing the tomb,(o) crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 She saw two angels(p) in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where Jesus' body(q) had been lying. 13 They said to her, "Woman, why are you crying?"
"Because they've taken away my Lord,"(r) she told them, "and I don't know where they've put Him." 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not know it was Jesus.(s)
15 "Woman," Jesus said to her, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?"
Supposing He was the gardener, she replied, "Sir, if you've removed Him, tell me where you've put Him, and I will take Him away."
16 Jesus said, "Mary."
Turning around, she said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!"[b]—which means "Teacher."(t)
17 "Don't cling to Me," Jesus told her, "for I have not yet ascended(u) to the Father.(v) But go to My brothers(w) and tell them that I am ascending to My Father(x) and your Father—to My God(y) and your God."
18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord!"(z) And she told them what[c] He had said to her.
The Disciples Commissioned
19 In the evening of that first day of the week,(aa) the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because of their fear of the Jews. Then Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, "Peace to you!" (ab)
20 Having said this, He showed them His hands and His side.(ac) So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
21 Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me,(ad) I also send you." (ae) 22 After saying this, He breathed on them(af) and said,[d] "Receive the Holy Spirit.(ag) 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." (ah)
Thomas Sees and Believes
24 But one of the Twelve, Thomas(ai) (called "Twin"), was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples kept telling him, "We have seen the Lord!"
But he said to them, "If I don't see the mark of the nails in His hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails,(aj) and put my hand into His side,(ak) I will never believe!"(al)
26 After eight days His disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, "Peace to you!"
27 Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and observe My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Don't be an unbeliever, but a believer." (am)
28 Thomas responded to Him, "My Lord and my God!"
29 Jesus said, "Because you have seen Me, you have believed.[e] Those who believe without seeing(an) are blessed."
The Purpose of This Gospel
30 Jesus performed many other signs(ao) in the presence of His disciples that are not written(ap) in this book.(aq) 31 But these are written so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah,(ar) the Son(as) of God,[f](at) and by believing you may have life in His name.(au)
