Responses to Saul's Death

1 After the death of Saul,(a) David returned from defeating the Amalekites(b) and stayed at Ziklag two days. 2 On the third day a man with torn clothes and dust on his head(c) came from Saul's camp. When he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage. 3 David asked him, "Where have you come from?"

He replied to him, "I've escaped from the Israelite camp."

4 "What was the outcome? Tell me," David asked him.

"The troops fled from the battle," he answered. "Many of the troops have fallen and are dead. Also, Saul and his son Jonathan are dead."(d)

5 David asked the young man who had brought him the report, "How do you know Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?"

6 "I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,"(e) he replied, "and there was Saul, leaning on his spear. At that very moment the chariots and the cavalry were closing in on him. 7 When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, so I answered: I'm at your service. 8 He asked me, ‘Who are you?' I told him: I'm an Amalekite.(f) 9 Then he begged me, ‘Stand over me and kill me, for I'm mortally wounded,[a] but my life still lingers.'(g) 10 So I stood over him and killed him because I knew that after he had fallen he couldn't survive. I took the crown that was on his head and the armband that was on his arm, and I've brought them here to my lord."

11 Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them,(h) and all the men with him did the same. 12 They mourned, wept, and fasted until the evening(i) for those who died by the sword—for Saul, his son Jonathan, the Lord 's people, and the house of Israel.

13 David inquired of the young man who had brought him the report, "Where are you from?"

"I'm the son of a foreigner," he said. "I'm an Amalekite."

14 David questioned him, "How is it that you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord 's anointed?"(j) 15 Then David summoned one of his servants and said, "Come here and kill him!" The servant struck him, and he died.(k) 16 For David had said to the Amalekite, "Your blood is on your own head(l) because your own mouth testified against you by saying, ‘I killed the Lord 's anointed.'"

17 David sang the following lament(m) for Saul and his son Jonathan, 18 and he ordered that the Judahites be taught The Song of the Bow. It is written in the Book of Jashar:[b](n)

19 The splendor of Israel lies slain on your heights.
How the mighty have fallen!
20 Do not tell it in Gath,
don't announce it in the marketplaces of Ashkelon,
or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,(o)
and the daughters of the uncircumcised will gloat.
21 Mountains of Gilboa,
let no dew or rain be on you,
or fields of offerings,[c]
for there the shield of the mighty was defiled(p)
the shield of Saul, no longer anointed with oil.(q)
22 Jonathan's bow never retreated,
Saul's sword never returned unstained,[d]
from the blood of the slain,
from the bodies of the mighty.
23 Saul and Jonathan,
loved and delightful,
they were not parted in life or in death.
They were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.
24 Daughters of Israel, weep for Saul,
who clothed you in scarlet, with luxurious things,
who decked your garments with gold ornaments.(r)
25 How the mighty have fallen in the thick of battle!
Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
26 I grieve for you, Jonathan, my brother.
You were such a friend to me.
Your love for me was more wonderful
than the love of women.(s)
27 How the mighty have fallen
and the weapons of war have perished!

Psalm 72

A Prayer for the King

Solomonic.(a)

1 God, give Your justice to the king
and Your righteousness to the king's son.(b)
2 He will judge Your people with righteousness
and Your afflicted ones with justice.(c)
3 May the mountains bring prosperity[a] to the people
and the hills, righteousness.(d)
4 May he vindicate the afflicted among the people,
help the poor,
and crush the oppressor.(e)

5 May he continue[b] while the sun endures
and as long as the moon, throughout all generations.(f)
6 May he be like rain that falls on the cut grass,
like spring showers that water the earth.(g)
7 May the righteous[c] flourish in his days
and prosperity[d] abound
until the moon is no more.(h)

8 May he rule from sea to sea
and from the Euphrates
to the ends of the earth.(i)
9 May desert tribes kneel before him
and his enemies lick the dust.(j)
10 May the kings of Tarshish
and the coasts and islands bring tribute,
the kings of Sheba and Seba offer gifts.(k)
11 Let all kings bow down to him,
all nations serve him.(l)

12 For he will rescue the poor who cry out
and the afflicted who have no helper.(m)
13 He will have pity on the poor and helpless
and save the lives of the poor.(n)
14 He will redeem them from oppression and violence,
for their lives are[e] precious[f] in his sight.(o)

15 May he live long!
May gold from Sheba be given to him.
May prayer be offered for him continually,
and may he be blessed all day long.(p)
16 May there be plenty of grain in the land;
may it wave on the tops of the mountains.
May its crops be like Lebanon.
May people flourish in the cities
like the grass of the field.(q)
17 May his name endure forever;
as long as the sun shines,
may his fame increase.
May all nations be blessed by him
and call him blessed.(r)

18 May the Lord God, the God of Israel,
who alone does wonders, be praised.(s)
19 May His glorious name be praised forever;
the whole earth is filled with His glory.(t)
Amen and amen.
20 The prayers of David son of Jesse are concluded.(u)

All the churches of Christ send you greetings.

Warning against Divisive People

17 Now I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause dissensions and obstacles contrary to the doctrine you have learned.(p) Avoid them,(q) 18 for such people do not serve our Lord Christ(r) but their own appetites.[j](s) They deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting with smooth talk and flattering words.(t)

Paul's Gracious Conclusion

19 The report of your obedience has reached everyone.(u) Therefore I rejoice over you. But I want you to be wise about what is good, yet innocent about what is evil.(v) 20 The God of peace(w) will soon crush Satan(x) under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.(y)

21 Timothy,(z) my coworker, and Lucius,(aa) Jason,(ab) and Sosipater,(ac) my fellow countrymen, greet you.

22 I Tertius, who wrote this letter,(ad) greet you in the Lord.[k]

23 Gaius,(ae) who is host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus,(af) the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus greet you.

[24 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.][l]

Glory to God

25 Now to Him who has power to strengthen you(ag) according to my gospel and the proclamation about Jesus Christ,(ah) according to the revelation of the mystery kept silent(ai) for long ages(aj) 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic Scriptures,(ak) according to the command of the eternal God to advance the obedience of faith[m](al) among all nations— 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ—to Him be the glory forever![n](am) Amen.
