2 Kings 14
Chapter 14
Judah's King Amaziah
1 In(a) the second year of Israel's King Jehoash[a](b) son of Jehoahaz,[b] Amaziah(c) son of Joash became king of Judah. 2 He was 25 years old when he became king and reigned 29 years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddan[c] and was from Jerusalem. 3 He did what was right in the Lord 's sight, but not like his ancestor David. He did everything his father Joash had done.(d) 4 Yet the high places were not taken away, and the people continued sacrificing and burning incense on the high places.(e)
5 As soon as the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, Amaziah killed his servants who had murdered his father the king.(f) 6 However, he did not put the children of the murderers to death, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses where the Lord commanded, "Fathers must not be put to death because of children, and children must not be put to death because of fathers; instead, each one will be put to death for his own sin."(g)
7 Amaziah killed 10,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt.(h) He took Sela(i) in battle and called it Joktheel,(j) which is its name to this very day. 8 Amaziah then sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us meet face to face."(k)
9 King Jehoash of Israel sent word to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, "The thistle that was in Lebanon once sent a message to the cedar(l) that was in Lebanon,(m) saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as a wife.' Then a wild animal that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle. 10 You have indeed defeated Edom, and you have become overconfident.(n) Enjoy your glory and stay at home. Why should you stir up such trouble that you fall—you and Judah with you?"
11 But Amaziah would not listen, so King Jehoash of Israel advanced. He and King Amaziah of Judah faced off at Beth-shemesh(o) that belongs to Judah. 12 Judah was routed before Israel, and everyone fled to his own tent.(p) 13 King Jehoash of Israel captured Judah's King Amaziah son of Joash,[d] son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down 200 yards[e] of Jerusalem's wall from the Ephraim Gate(q) to the Corner Gate.(r) 14 He took all the gold and silver, all the articles found in the Lord 's temple and in the treasuries of the king's palace, and some hostages.(s) Then he returned to Samaria.
Jehoash's Death
15 The rest of the events of Jehoash's reign, along with his accomplishments, his might, and how he waged war against Amaziah king of Judah, are written in the Historical Record of Israel's Kings.(t) 16 Jehoash rested with his fathers, and he was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. His son Jeroboam became king in his place.
Amaziah's Death
17 Judah's King Amaziah son of Joash lived 15 years after the death of Israel's King Jehoash son of Jehoahaz.(u) 18 The rest of the events of Amaziah's reign are written in the Historical Record of Judah's Kings.(v) 19 A conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem,(w) and he fled to Lachish.(x) However, men were sent after him to Lachish, and they put him to death there. 20 They carried him back(y) on horses, and he was buried in Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David.(z)
21 Then all the people of Judah took Azariah,[f](aa) who was 16 years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah. 22 He rebuilt Elath[g](ab) and restored it to Judah after Amaziah the king rested with his fathers.
Israel's King Jeroboam
23 In the fifteenth year of Judah's King Amaziah son of Joash, Jeroboam(ac) son of Jehoash[h] became king of Israel in Samaria and reigned 41 years. 24 He did what was evil in the Lord 's sight. He did not turn away from all the sins Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.(ad)
25 He restored Israel's border(ae) from Lebo-hamath(af) as far as the Sea of the Arabah,(ag) according to the word the Lord , the God of Israel, had spoken through His servant, the prophet Jonah(ah) son of Amittai from Gath-hepher.(ai) 26 For the Lord saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter.(aj) There was no one to help Israel, neither bond nor free. 27 However, the Lord had not said He would blot out the name of Israel under heaven,(ak) so He delivered(al) them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Jehoash.[i]
28 The rest of the events of Jeroboam's reign—along with all his accomplishments, the power he had to wage war, and how he recovered for Israel Damascus(am) and Hamath,(an) which had belonged to Judah[j] —are written in the Historical Record of Israel's Kings.(ao) 29 Jeroboam rested with his fathers, the kings of Israel. His son Zechariah became king in his place.(ap)
Micah 4:1-5:1
Chapter 4
The Lord's Rule from Restored Zion
1 In the last days(a)
the mountain of the
Lord
's house(b)
will be established
at the top of the mountains
and will be raised above the hills.
Peoples will stream to it,(c)
2 and many nations will come and say,(d)
"Come, let us go up to the mountain of the
Lord
,(e)
to the house of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us about His ways(f)
so we may walk in His paths."
For instruction will go out of Zion(g)
and the word of the
Lord
from Jerusalem.
3 He will settle disputes among many peoples(h)
and provide arbitration for strong nations
that are far away.
They will beat their swords into plows,
and their spears into pruning knives.
Nation will not take up the sword against nation,
and they will never again train for war.
4 But each man will sit under his grapevine(i)
and under his fig tree
with no one to frighten him.(j)
For the mouth of the
Lord
(k) of Hosts
has promised this.
5 Though all the peoples each walk
in the name of their gods,(l)
we will walk(m) in the name of Yahweh our God
forever and ever.(n)
6 On that day—
this is the
Lord
's declaration—
I will assemble the lame
and gather the scattered,(o)
those I have injured.
7 I will make the lame into a remnant,(p)
those far removed into a strong nation.
Then the
Lord
will rule over them(q) in Mount Zion
from this time on and forever.
8 And you, watchtower for the flock,(r)
fortified hill[a] of Daughter Zion,
the former rule(s) will come to you,
sovereignty will come to Daughter Jerusalem.
From Exile to Victory
9 Now, why are you shouting loudly?(t)
Is there no king with you?
Has your counselor perished(u)
so that anguish grips you like a woman in labor?
10 Writhe and cry out,[b](v) Daughter Zion,
like a woman in labor,
for now you will leave the city(w)
and camp in the open fields.
You will go to Babylon;
there you will be rescued;(x)
there the
Lord
will redeem you(y)
from the power of your enemies!
11 Many nations have now assembled against you;(z)
they say, "Let her be defiled,
and let us feast our eyes on Zion."
12 But they do not know the
Lord
's intentions(aa)
or understand His plan,
that He has gathered them
like sheaves to the threshing floor.
13 Rise and thresh,(ab) Daughter Zion,
for I will make your horns iron
and your hooves bronze,
so you can crush many peoples.(ac)
Then you[c] will set apart their plunder(ad)
to the
Lord
for destruction,
their wealth to the Lord of all the earth.
Chapter 5
From Defeated Ruler to Conquering King
1 [a]Now, daughter who is under attack,
you slash yourself in grief;
a siege is set against us!
They are striking the judge(a) of Israel
on the cheek with a rod.

Chapter 1
Greeting
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God's will,(a) and Timothy(b) our[a] brother:
To God's church at Corinth,(c) with all the saints who are throughout Achaia.(d)
2 Grace to you and peace(e) from God our Father(f) and the Lord Jesus Christ.
The God of Comfort
3 Praise(g) the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies(h) and the God of all comfort.(i) 4 He comforts us in all our affliction,[b] so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For as the sufferings(j) of Christ(k) overflow to us, so through Christ our comfort also overflows.(l) 6 If we are afflicted,(m) it is for your comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is experienced in your endurance of the same sufferings that we suffer.(n) 7 And our hope(o) for you is firm, because we know that as you share(p) in the sufferings, so you will share in the comfort.
8 For we don't want you to be unaware, brothers, of our affliction that took place in Asia:(q) we were completely overwhelmed—beyond our strength(r)—so that we even despaired(s) of life. 9 Indeed, we personally had a death sentence within ourselves, so that we would not trust in ourselves but in God(t) who raises(u) the dead. 10 He has delivered(v) us from such a terrible death,(w) and He will deliver us. We have put our hope in Him that He will deliver us again 11 while you join in helping us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our[c] behalf for the gift that came to us through the prayers of many.
A Clear Conscience
12 For this is our confidence: The testimony(x) of our conscience(y) is that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, with God-given sincerity and purity, not by fleshly[d] wisdom(z) but by God's grace.(aa) 13 Now we are writing nothing to you other than what you can read and also understand. I hope you will understand completely— 14 as you have partially understood us—that we are your reason for pride,(ab) as you are ours,(ac) in the day of our[e] Lord Jesus.(ad)
A Visit Postponed
15 I planned with this confidence to come to you first,(ae) so you could have a double benefit,[f] 16 and to go on to Macedonia(af) with your help, then come to you again from Macedonia and be given a start by you(ag) on my journey(ah) to Judea.(ai) 17 So when I planned this, was I irresponsible? Or what I plan, do I plan in a purely human[g](aj) way so that I say "Yes, yes" and "No, no" simultaneously? 18 As God is faithful,(ak) our message to you is not "Yes and no." 19 For the Son of God,(al) Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silvanus[h](am) and Timothy—did not become "Yes and no"; on the contrary, a final "Yes" has come in Him.(an) 20 For every one of God's promises(ao) is "Yes" in Him. Therefore, the "Amen"(ap) is also spoken through Him by us for God's glory.(aq) 21 Now it is God who strengthens us, with you, in Christ and has anointed(ar) us. 22 He has also sealed us and given us the Spirit as a down payment(as) in our hearts.(at)
23 I call on God as a witness,(au) on my life, that it was to spare you that I did not come to Corinth.(av) 24 I do not mean that we have control of[i] your faith, but we are workers with you for your joy, because you stand(aw) by faith.
Chapter 2
1 1 In fact, I made up my mind about this:[a] I would not come to you on another painful visit.[b] 2 For if I cause you pain, then who will cheer me other than the one being hurt by me?[c] 3 I wrote this very thing so that when I came I wouldn't have pain from those who ought to give me joy, because I am confident(a) about all of you that my joy will also be yours. 4 For I wrote to you with many tears out of an extremely troubled and anguished heart—not that you should be hurt, but that you should know the abundant love I have for you.
