Jeremiah 45-46
Chapter 45
The Lord's Message to Baruch
1 This is the word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch son of Neriah(a) when he wrote these words on a scroll at Jeremiah's dictation[a](b) in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah:(c) 2 "This is what the Lord , the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: 3 ‘You have said, "Woe is me, because the Lord has added misery to my pain! I am worn out with[b] groaning and have found no rest."'(d)
4 "This is what you are to say to him: ‘This is what the Lord says: What I have built I am about to demolish, and what I have planted I am about to uproot(e)—the whole land! 5 But as for you, do you seek great things for yourself? Stop seeking! For I am about to bring disaster on every living creature'—this is the Lord 's declaration—‘but I will grant you your life like the spoils of war(f) wherever you go.'"
Chapter 46
1 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet about the nations:(a)
Prophecies against Egypt
2 About Egypt and the army of Pharaoh Neco, Egypt's king,(b) which was defeated at Carchemish(c) on the Euphrates River by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon in the fourth year of Judah's King Jehoiakim son of Josiah:(d)
3 Deploy small shields(e) and large;
draw near for battle!
4 Harness the horses;
mount the steeds;[a]
take your positions with helmets on!
Polish the lances;
put on armor!(f)
5 Why have I seen this?
They are terrified,
they are retreating,
their warriors are crushed,
they flee headlong,
they never look back,
terror is on every side!(g)
This is the
Lord
's declaration.
6 The swift cannot flee,
and the warrior cannot escape!
In the north by the bank of the Euphrates River,
they stumble and fall.(h)
7 Who is this, rising like the Nile,(i)
like rivers whose waters churn?
8 Egypt rises like the Nile,
and its waters churn like rivers.
He boasts, "I will go up, I will cover the earth;
I will destroy cities with their residents."
9 Rise up, you cavalry!
Race furiously, you chariots!
Let the warriors go out—
Cush and Put,(j)
who are able to handle shields,
and the Ludim,(k)
who are able to handle and string the bow.(l)
10 That day belongs to the Lord, the
God
of Hosts,
a day of vengeance to avenge Himself
against His adversaries.
The sword will devour and be satisfied;
it will drink its fill of their blood,
because it will be a sacrifice(m) to the Lord, the
God
of Hosts,
in the northern land by the Euphrates River.
11 Go up to Gilead and get balm,(n)
Virgin Daughter Egypt!
You have multiplied remedies in vain;
there is no healing for you.
12 The nations have heard of your dishonor,(o)
and your outcry fills the earth,
because warrior stumbles against warrior
and together both of them have fallen.
13 This is the word the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to defeat the land of Egypt:(p)
14 Announce it in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol!(q)
Proclaim it in Memphis and in Tahpanhes!
Say: Take positions! Prepare yourself,
for the sword devours all around you.(r)
15 Why have your strong ones been swept away?
Each has not stood,
for the
Lord
has thrust him down.
16 He continues to stumble.(s)
Indeed, each falls over the other.
They say, "Get up! Let's return to our people
and to the land of our birth,
away from the sword that oppresses."(t)
17 There they will cry out,
"Pharaoh king of Egypt was all noise;
he let the opportune moment pass."
18 As I live—
this is the King's declaration;
Yahweh of Hosts is His name.(u)
He will come like Tabor among the mountains
and like Carmel by the sea.
19 Get your bags ready for exile,
inhabitant of Daughter Egypt!(v)
For Memphis will become a desolation,
uninhabited ruins.
20 Egypt is a beautiful young cow,(w)
but a horsefly from the north is coming against her.[b](x)
21 Even her mercenaries among her
are like stall-fed calves.
They too will turn back;
together they will flee;
they will not take their stand,
for the day of their calamity is coming on them,
the time of their punishment.(y)
22 Egypt will hiss like a slithering snake,[c]
for the enemy will come with an army;
with axes they will come against her
like those who cut trees.(z)
23 They will cut down her forest—
this is the
Lord
's declaration—
though it is dense,
for they are more numerous than locusts;
they cannot be counted.(aa)
24 Daughter Egypt will be put to shame,
handed over to a northern people.(ab)
25 The Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: "I am about to punish Amon, god of Thebes,(ac) along with Pharaoh, Egypt, her gods, and her kings—Pharaoh and those trusting in him. 26 I will hand them over to those who want to take their lives(ad)—to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his officers. But after this,(ae) it will be inhabited again as in ancient times."
This is the Lord 's declaration.
Reassurance for Israel
27 But you, My servant Jacob, do not be afraid,(af)
and do not be discouraged, Israel,
for without fail I will save you from far away
and your descendants, from the land of their captivity!
Jacob will return and have calm and quiet
with no one to frighten him.
28 And you, My servant Jacob, do not be afraid—
this is the
Lord
's declaration—
for I will be with you.(ag)
I will bring destruction on all the nations
where I have banished you,
but I will not bring destruction on you.
I will discipline you with justice,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished.(ah)

Lord
, I call on You; hurry to help me.
Listen to my voice when I call on You.(a)
2 May my prayer be set before You as incense,(b)
the raising of my hands as the evening offering.(c)
3
Lord
, set up a guard for my mouth;
keep watch at the door of my lips.(d)
4 Do not let my heart turn to any evil thing
or perform wicked acts
with men who commit sin.
Do not let me feast on their delicacies.(e)
5 Let the righteous one strike me—
it is an act of faithful love;
let him rebuke me—
it is oil for my head;
let me[a] not refuse it.(f)
Even now my prayer is against
the evil acts of the wicked.[b](g)
6 When their rulers[c] will be thrown off
the sides of a cliff,
the people[d] will listen to my words,
for they are pleasing.(h)
7 As when one plows and breaks up the soil,
turning up rocks,
so our[e] bones have been scattered
at the mouth of Sheol.(i)
8 But my eyes look to You, Lord
God
.
I seek refuge in You; do not let me die.[f](j)
9 Protect me from[g] the trap they have set for me,
and from the snares of evildoers.(k)
10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets,
while I pass by safely.(l)

Chapter 3
The Day of the Lord
1 Dear friends, this is now the second letter(a) I have written to you; in both letters, I want to develop a genuine(b) understanding with a reminder, 2 so that you can remember the words previously spoken by the holy prophets and the command of our Lord and Savior given through your apostles. 3 First, be aware of this: Scoffers will come in the last days(c) to scoff, living according to their own desires, 4 saying, "Where is the promise of His coming?(d) Ever since the fathers fell asleep,(e) all things continue as they have been since the beginning of creation." 5 They willfully ignore this: Long ago the heavens and the earth were brought about from water and through water(f) by the word of God.(g) 6 Through these waters the world of that time perished when it was flooded.(h) 7 But by the same word,(i) the present heavens and earth are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment(j) and destruction of ungodly men.
8 Dear friends, don't let this one thing escape you: With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.(k) 9 The Lord does not delay His promise,(l) as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any(m) to perish(n) but all to come to repentance.(o)
10 But the Day of the Lord(p) will come like a thief;[a](q) on that day the heavens will pass away(r) with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved,(s) and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed.[b] 11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, it is clear what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness 12 as you wait for and earnestly desire the coming[c] of the day of God.(t) The heavens will be on fire and be dissolved because of it, and the elements will melt with the heat. 13 But based on His promise, we wait for the new heavens and a new earth,(u) where righteousness will dwell.(v)
Conclusion
14 Therefore, dear friends, while you wait for these things, make every effort to be found at peace with Him without spot or blemish.(w) 15 Also, regard the patience of our Lord as an opportunity for salvation, just as our dear brother Paul has written to you according to the wisdom given to him.(x) 16 He speaks about these things in all his letters in which there are some matters that are hard to understand. The untaught and unstable twist them to their own destruction,(y) as they also do with the rest of the Scriptures.
17 Therefore, dear friends, since you know this in advance, be on your guard,(z) so that you are not led away by the error of lawless people and fall from your own stability. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge(aa) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.[d](ab) Amen.[e]
