Chapter 5

Prayer for Restoration

1 Yahweh, remember what has happened to us.
Look, and see our disgrace!(a)
2 Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers,
our houses to foreigners.
3 We have become orphans, fatherless;
our mothers are widows.
4 We must pay for the water we drink;
our wood comes at a price.
5 We are closely pursued;
we are tired, and no one offers us rest.
6 We made a treaty with[a] Egypt
and with Assyria, to get enough food.(b)
7 Our fathers sinned; they no longer exist,
but we bear their punishment.
8 Slaves rule over us;(c)
no one rescues us from their hands.
9 We secure our food at the risk of our lives
because of the sword in the wilderness.
10 Our skin is as hot[b] as an oven(d)
from the ravages of hunger.
11 Women are raped in Zion,
girls in the cities of Judah.
12 Princes are hung up by their hands;
elders are shown no respect.(e)
13 Young men labor at millstones;(f)
boys stumble under loads of wood.
14 The elders have left the city gate,
the young men, their music.(g)
15 Joy has left our hearts;(h)
our dancing has turned to mourning.
16 The crown has fallen from our head.(i)
Woe to us, for we have sinned.(j)
17 Because of this, our heart is sick;
because of these, our eyes grow dim:(k)
18 because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate
and has jackals prowling in it.(l)
19 You, Lord , are enthroned forever;
Your throne endures from generation to generation.(m)
20 Why have You forgotten us forever,(n)
abandoned us for our entire lives?
21  Lord , restore us to Yourself, so we may return;(o)
renew our days as in former times,
22 unless You have completely rejected us
and are intensely angry with us.

Chapter 147

Psalm 147

God Restores Jerusalem

1 Hallelujah!
How good it is to sing to our God,
for praise is pleasant and lovely.(a)

2 The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem;(b)
He gathers Israel's exiled people.(c)
3 He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.(d)
4 He counts the number of the stars;
He gives names to all of them.(e)
5 Our Lord is great, vast in power;
His understanding is infinite.[a](f)
6 The Lord helps the afflicted
but brings the wicked to the ground.(g)

7 Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
play the lyre to our God,(h)
8 who covers the sky with clouds,
prepares rain for the earth,
and causes grass to grow on the hills.(i)
9 He provides the animals with their food,
and the young ravens, what they cry for.(j)

10 He is not impressed by the strength of a horse;
He does not value the power[b] of a man.(k)
11 The Lord values those who fear Him,
those who put their hope in His faithful love.(l)

12 Exalt the Lord , Jerusalem;
praise your God, Zion!(m)
13 For He strengthens the bars of your gates
and blesses your children within you.(n)
14 He endows your territory with prosperity;[c](o)
He satisfies you with the finest wheat.(p)

15 He sends His command throughout the earth;
His word runs swiftly.(q)
16 He spreads snow like wool;
He scatters frost like ashes;(r)
17 He throws His hailstones like crumbs.
Who can withstand His cold?(s)
18 He sends His word and melts them;
He unleashes His winds,[d] and the waters flow.(t)

19 He declares His word to Jacob,
His statutes and judgments to Israel.(u)
20 He has not done this for any nation;
they do not know[e] His judgments.(v)
Hallelujah!

Chapter 5

Freedom of the Christian

1 Christ has liberated us to be free. Stand firm(a) then and don't submit again to a yoke of slavery.(b) 2 Take note! I, Paul, tell you that if you get yourselves circumcised, Christ will not benefit you at all. 3 Again I testify to every man who gets himself circumcised that he is obligated to keep the entire law. 4 You who are trying to be justified by the law are alienated from Christ; you have fallen from grace.(c) 5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we eagerly wait(d) for the hope(e) of righteousness. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision accomplishes anything; what matters is faith(f) working through love.(g)

7 You were running well. Who prevented you from obeying the truth?(h) 8 This persuasion did not come from the One who called you.(i) 9 A little yeast leavens the whole lump of dough. 10 I have confidence in the Lord you will not accept any other view. But whoever it is that is confusing you will pay the penalty.(j) 11 Now brothers, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross(k) has been abolished. 12 I wish those who are disturbing you might also get themselves castrated!

13 For you were called(l) to be free, brothers; only don't use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled(m) in one statement: Love your neighbor as yourself. (n)[a] 15 But if you bite and devour(o) one another, watch out, or you will be consumed by one another.
