Verse 1
men = Hebrew sing, 'ish ( App-14 ), as we use the expression "400 foot". When plural, used only of angels.
Verse 4
and kissed him. This is one of the Hebrew words with "extraordinary points", to show that the Massorites thought it should be omitted. See App-31 . It should read, "and fell on his neck and wept"; without kissing. This is the custom in Genesis. Compare Genesis 45:14 ; Genesis 46:29 .
Verse 9
enough = abundance, plenty.
Verse 10
Jacob said. Figure of speech Ellipsis . ( App-6 ). Ellipsis should be supplied thus: "Jacob [refused, and] said. "
Verse 13
men. Samaritan Pentateuch and Septuagint read "I".
Verse 15
What needeth it? Hebrew What for? or Why so? Figure of speech Erotesis and Ellipsis ( App-6 )= Why [have] anything?
Verse 17
booths. Hebrew. succoth. Hence the name. First occurance.
Verse 18
came to Shalem, a city of Shechem; read, came in peace to the city of Shechem; the Hebrew Shalem means peace.
Verse 19
Hamor. Probably a title, like Abimelech and Pharaoh.
Verse 20
El-elohe-Israel - "GOD-the God-of-Israel", but not the place for this altar. Compare Genesis 35:1 .
