Introduction

1:4 encourages (a-2) Parakaleo , as Matthew 2:18 ; Matthew 5:4 ; Acts 20:12 ; 1 Thessalonians 3:7 . I do not say 'comfort,' as that is rather conveyed in paramutheomai , so translated in 1 Thessalonians 2:11 ; 1 Thessalonians 5:14 ; 'console,' John 11:19 ,John 11:31 ; and 'consolation,' 1 Corinthians 14:3 . The difference is slight, but here, as in Acts 20:0 , there is the sense of 'cheered,' and this might replace 'encourage' and 'encouragement' if there were a suitable noun.

Verse 1

13:1 matter (d-19) Rhema , 'utterance.' see Deuteronomy 19:15 .

Verse 3

13:3 Christ (e-7) I do not put 'the Christ' here, though there be the article, because it is specially connected with the speaking.

Verse 4

13:4 in (f-8) by (f-13) Ek , characterizing the principle on which it took place.

Verse 5

13:5 yourselves, (g-19) 'Yourselves' is ambiguous in English; but it is the accusative after 'recognize,' not 'yourselves know' but 'know yourselves.'

Verse 10

13:10 authority (h-21) Or 'power;' it is exousia , 'title,' not mere competency. see Note, Matthew 10:1 . overthrowing. (i-34) See ch. 10.8.

Verse 11

13:11 rejoice; (k-5) Or 'farewell.' perfected; (l-7) As 'perfectly united,' 1 Corinthians 1:10 .

Verse 14

13:14 communion (m-15) Or 'fellowship,' koinonia , as 1 Corinthians 1:9 .
