Virgin, martyr, one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers; died Pisidia, Asia Minor, c275 She was the daughter of a pagan priest, but was brought up a Christian by her nurse, was disowned by her father, refused to marry a Roman prefect, Olybrius, was subjected to tortures which left her unharmed, and was decapitated. She is often represented in art as a shepherdess, or portrayed crushing a serpent. She is called Marina in the Greek Church.
