a Congregational minister, was born at New Canaan, Conn., Dec. 31, 1803; In 1824 he entered Yale College, and was converted during his course of study there. Immediately after his graduation, in 1828, he became a teacher in the Hartford Grammar-school, and later a tutor in Yale College. In 1830 he entered the Yale Theological School In 1833 he resigned his tutorship to enter the missionary work, and, upon his arrival in Illinois, assisted in organizing a church at Jacksonville, of which he soon after became pastor. In the fall of 1838 he resigned this charge and went to Pittsfield, Ill., where he spent the remainder of his days, but resigned his pastoral charge three years before his death, which occurred Feb. 9, 1871.
