or rather SHEBAT (Heb. Shebat, שְׁבָט , a rod or tribe; Sept. Σαβάτ ), the fifth month of the Jewish civil year, and the eleventh of the ecclesiastical year, from the new moon of February to that of March; or, according to others, corresponding to our January. (See MONTH). The name is substantially the same in the Syriac and Arabic. The Jews began in this month to number the years of the trees they planted, the fruits of which were esteemed impure till the fourth year (Zechariah 1:7). (See CALENDAR, JEWISH).
